What is Wake-on-LAN (WOL)?
It is powerful and convenient feature that enables users to remotely power up their computer over a network, saving energy while also allowing remote access to the computer when needed.
Windows 10 Wake-on-LAN Problem
Wake-on-LAN (WOL) does not work or stopped working in Windows 10 after upgrade from Windows 8.1 or Windows 7. In my case, I use Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.
Even though I did all settings for Wake-on-LAN such as disabling turn on fast startup, configuring adapter options related to WOL, and etc, WOL is not working.
My environment:
Previous OS: Windows 8.1 Pro x64
Current OS: Windows 10 Pro x64
Mainboard: Asus H87-Plus
NIC: Onboard Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
NIC driver version: 9.1.401.2015 released on April 1, 2015
Cause:
Realtek Ethernet Card driver that comes with Windows update causes the problem.
Solution to Wake-on-LAN Problem After Upgrade to Windows 10
Install Realtek Ethernet Card driver ( Even though it is older than Microsoft driver) from Realtek Website.
Download Realtek PCIe NIC Driver
Note: Make sure you enabled WOL feature for your NIC.
Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network Connections -> right click ethernet -> properties -> client for microsoft networks -> Configure … -> Power Management -> Wake on LAN: -> Wake on Magic Packet: enabled, Wake on Magic Packet from power off state: enabled

Thanks, but it didn’t help me. I found out another solution and an explanation.
When you shutdown windows 10 from start menu (with default settings) windows does not shut down completely. It goes into some sort of “Hybrid shutdown” (called “fast start”).
To test if this is the case, you can easily open Command line (cmd) and type:
shutdown -s -t 0
Try to wake the computer via Wake-On-LAN. If it works, “fast start” was probably your problem. To disable fast start go to:
Control panel -> Power Options -> Choose what the power buttons do -> Tick of the box saying “Turn on fast startup (recommended)”.

If it did not work in cmd, first try to update your drivers, if it still does not work you probably have another problem… Check your BIOS/UEFI settings. Probably under some sort of “Power Management Setup” or “Boot” settings. If you have an PCI(-e) card you also need to check in BIOS/UEFI to see if it’s powered on, even if the computer is off.

There is a new driver on the realtek webpage (10.6.1001.2015). Installed this new one and WOL is working from shutdown again.
